Vista certainly looks a lot nicer, can be easier to use and is a lot more secure than Windows XP. However to look nicer and to have some of the easier to use features, Vista requires more “grunt” to run, and the security features can also be a pain in the a*s - its suspicious of almost everything. For a beginner or general home user, its more pleasant to use than XP, but if you're going to want to do some complex things it becomes a huge hinderance. Certainly networking can be a problem depending on what type of Vista you get.

At work, we've just got 6 new computers with Vista Business. I turned one on and used Vista for a while, the computer ran quite nicely. I took another of these new machines and got rid of Vista, I put XP on instead - the computer ran like a rocket. Because our system at work is incompatible with Vista, I'm putting XP on all of them anyway, but it was quite remarkable to see the difference side by side.

First please check your order. Did the invoice specify Integrated wireless?

Is your wireless turned on? To check, please look for a button or switch that contains one of these 2 symbols:

After pressing the button or sliding the switch to the “on” position. There should be an icon in the lower right hand corner that states “Wireless connections are now available. Please click here.”

Once clicked upon, a window should open and you should see the router you are attempting to connect to.
Click the router and enter the password you set. If you have not pre-configured a password, there is no need to enter one. Proceed to the next step.
You should be able to select “connect” or something to that affect. After this point you should be connected.

Jessica on Disable UAC (User Account Control)

If you are a moderate user of Vista my guess is that you hate the User Account Control -- otherwise known as the annoying window that pops up and asks you if you truly want to do what it is you just requested the operating system do.

This guide will walk you through the disabling process. There are two different ways to disable UAC. One is through command prompt; the other, through MSCONFIG.

For use with msconfig, click on the start button, and type in 'msconfig' in the white bar that says "start search."

A window will pop up with a series of options. This window is the "System Configuration Utility", only disable what you know or what an admin or moderator on this forum instructs you to.

Select the last tab, labeled, 'tools.'

Tool names will display, scroll to the bottom of the list and you will see two different options listed.

"Disable UAC" and "Enable UAC."

Select "Disable UAC."

This option will enter the command promt code for you and save you the trouble of typing it in yourself.

Select "apply." and then "ok."

You will be required to reboot so save all your work before entering this utility.

After the re-boot finishes, you will see that you have successfully disabled User Account Conrol. You will see this because a red balloon will show up in the bottom right hand corner informing you that your computer is not entirely protected because this feature has been disabled. This is normal. You may ignore the message and resume to your previous work.

If you have any questions, feel free to post them here!
